I remember it so well because it was such a pivotal moment in my career. I grew up in a kind of Bluegrass bubble. I listened to one style of music, and that was pretty much it. One day, my assistant called me and said we had an offer to sing a song on someone’s record. She explained it was EDM music—electronic dance music, you know, the kind you hear in clubs.
At the time, my daughter was 19 and she listened to every type of music. I knew she would know who the artist was. So, I texted her and asked, “Have you heard of Avicii?” She responded immediately, saying, “Swedish DJ, he’s a genius, he’s my favorite artist.” I told her that he wanted me to sing a song on his next record, and she couldn’t believe it. She freaked out so hard and literally said, “If you don’t do this, I’m out!”
“Hey Brother” was the song, and I fell in love with it immediately. It had the kind of energy I look for in music, and the subject matter was fantastic. I ended up recording the song, and it’s by far the most listened-to piece of music I will ever have. I don’t think I will ever have the opportunity to record something that reaches as far into the corners of the earth as “Hey Brother.” It was like a beam came out of heaven and dropped this beautiful, amazing song into my lap.
I got to perform with Tim (Avicii) in Miami at Ultra Fest, and it was an amazing time. I took my daughter, and she got to meet him. It was the best experience a person in my field could have. To say it was amazing would be an understatement—it was beyond amazing.
Working with Avicii was an experience like no other. He wasn’t just a big star or a superstar; he was the Superstar. Even now, I’m still becoming aware of the corners his music touches. He’s reached more people with his music than probably anyone else I know. To be a part of that, even in a small way, is a thrill. It’s one of the highlights of my whole career.
Reflecting on this experience, it was really something I’ve never experienced before, and I probably will never experience that type of connection in a song again. It was amazing to be a part of, and I will always cherish the memories and the impact that “Hey Brother” has had on so many people around the world.
